Why do roots need oxygen if they're in soil, not air?
Roots breathe. Like any living tissue, they consume oxygen to produce the energy (ATP) they need to actively absorb nutrients. When the substrate stays permanently saturated, the air pockets between particles disappear and oxygen concentration in the rhizosphere crashes. Without oxygen, aerobic respiration shuts down, the root can no longer sustain active ion transport, and the plant starts showing symptoms that look like deficiencies: droopy leaves, widespread chlorosis, stunted growth.
In hydro, this is measured as dissolved oxygen (DO): a drop in dissolved oxygen in the root zone correlates with higher incidence of root pathogens like Pythium. In a pot with substrate, the mechanism is the same — but oxygen reaches the roots through the medium's pore spaces rather than dissolved in solution.
What's the difference between a heavy watering and overwatering?
It's not about how much water you give in a single session — it's about frequency. You can water to full runoff and that's fine for most substrates. The problem starts when you water again before the medium has had time to partially dry out.
- Correct watering: water thoroughly to runoff → let the medium dry → pot goes light → only then water again.
- Overwatering: watering again before it dries. The substrate never loses moisture, air pores stay water-filled, and the root slowly suffocates.
- The wet/dry cycle is not drought stress: the plant takes up water during the wet phase and oxygen as the medium opens back up. Both are essential.
- Practical check: lift the pot. A light pot for its size is asking for water; a heavy pot with drooping leaves is almost always overwatering.
What does an overwatered plant look like, and how is it different from a deficiency?
The most characteristic symptom is a contradiction: leaves drooping, going limp, or clawing downward even though the substrate is wet. A thirsty plant also has limp leaves — but the medium is dry and the pot is light. With overwatering, the medium is wet and the pot is heavy.
- Clawing (leaves curling downward like talons): classic sign of oxygen deprivation at the roots.
- Widespread chlorosis on both old AND new leaves at the same time: when the root isn't working, the plant can't efficiently absorb anything.
- Stopped or very slow growth with the medium always wet.
- True deficiencies follow a pattern — top or bottom of the canopy, interveinal or marginal. Overwatering has no pattern: it hits everything at once.
How do you tell overwatering apart from Pythium root rot?
Pythium is an oomycete (water mold) that lives in soil and water. It attacks weakened roots, and chronic overwatering is exactly the condition that favors it most: saturated substrate, high root-zone temperature, and roots already stressed by hypoxia. Overwatering and Pythium are not the same thing, but they almost always go together — the first one opens the door for the second.
- Overwatering without Pythium: roots are white or slightly tan, no foul smell. Fix the watering and the plant recovers.
- Pythium present: roots are brown, slimy or mushy, with a rot smell. Recovery also requires treatment with Trichoderma or other biocontrols.
- Pythium thrives with high substrate/solution temperature and low dissolved oxygen. Keeping the medium cool and running proper dry cycles cuts the risk significantly.
- In a pot, you can check for root rot by pulling the plant from the container or looking through the drainage holes: healthy root = white and firm; infected root = dark and slimy.
What's the right watering frequency for each substrate?
There's no universal number of days — it depends on the substrate, pot size, temperature, plant size, and stage of the cycle. What stays constant is the rule: water when the pot is light and the top 1–1.5 inches of substrate are dry to the touch.
- Soil: holds water longer. Generally every 2–4 days, but pot weight is the real guide.
- Coco: lower water retention and no nutrients of its own. More frequent — 1–2 times per day on large plants — but for small plants and seedlings in small pots, use the same lift-test logic.
- High perlite mixes (>50%): drains fast, you can water more often without overwatering risk.
- In flowering the plant drinks more than in veg, so the interval naturally shortens. That's not a problem — that's the plant telling you what it needs.
How do you correct overwatering once it's already set in?
If your plant has been sitting in a soaked medium for several days and is showing signs of root hypoxia, the fix is simple: let it dry out. Don't water again until the pot is clearly light, even if the leaves look a little worse in the meantime — recovery starts as soon as oxygen returns to the pore spaces.
- Don't pull the plant out of the medium to 'air out' the roots: transplant stress is worse than the benefit.
- If the mix has very little perlite, now is a good time to plan a better-draining blend for the next repot — at least 20–30% perlite in a soil mix.
- Active airflow around the pot speeds up substrate drying.
- If you check the roots and find rot (brown, slimy, foul smell), add a Trichoderma treatment — it has solid evidence as a Pythium biocontrol in soilless growing.
