How to Evaluate a Cannabis Fertilizer

Check three things on the label: (1) the declared nitrogen form (nitrate vs. ammoniacal — nitrate is what the plant takes up directly without acidifying the root zone); (2) the iron chelate (EDDHA holds stable in alkaline water: above pH 6.5, EDTA already precipitates, and DTPA doesn't cover the full range either); (3) whether the manufacturer publishes the bibliographic sources behind their formulation. A formula with no published sources is a marketing label, not a technical document. Everything else — micronutrients, pH, EC — gets evaluated after that.

Why can a fertilizer label mislead you without technically lying?

A label can correctly declare N, P, and K percentages and still deliver a product the plant can't use properly. The reason: label numbers don't distinguish between available and unavailable chemical forms. Ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen count the same on the label, but they don't work the same in the plant. Iron chelated with EDTA and with EDDHA both declare the same Fe percentage, but one precipitates in alkaline water and the other doesn't. Knowing how to read those distinctions gives you far more useful information than the percentage alone.

Which declared nitrogen form actually matters?

Nitrogen exists in solution primarily as nitrate (NO₃⁻) or ammonium (NH₄⁺). They're distinct forms with different effects on the plant and the growing medium.

  • Nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻): the plant takes it up directly without prior conversion. It doesn't significantly alter root-zone pH and is the dominant form recommended for hydroponics and coco (Marschner, 2012).
  • Ammoniacal nitrogen (NH₄⁺): the plant must convert it before uptaking it. At high proportions it acidifies the root zone and can cause ammonium toxicity, especially in seedlings and early stages (Britto & Kronzucker, 2002, DOI: 10.1078/0176-1617-0774).
  • Practical takeaway: a fertilizer that doesn't distinguish between both forms on the label tells you nothing about how it will behave in your water or your substrate. A technical product's label should declare % nitrate-N and % ammoniacal-N separately.

What is the iron chelate, and why does it change everything based on your water's pH?

Free iron in solution rapidly precipitates as oxides the root can't absorb. That's why fertilizers deliver it chelated: an organic molecule keeps it soluble. But that protection has a pH-dependent limit depending on the chelate type.

  • EDTA: stable up to pH ≈ 6.0. Above that it releases iron, which precipitates. In alkaline water (pH 7.5–8, common in many regions) this chelate has already failed before reaching the root.
  • DTPA: holds up to pH ≈ 7.0–7.5. Better than EDTA but doesn't cover the full range if your water is above 7.5.
  • EDDHA: stable from pH 4 to 10. This is the chelate that keeps iron available in any real grow water, including hard and alkaline water (Marschner, 2012; Lucena, 2003).

If the label says 'chelated iron' without specifying the type, you have no way of knowing what you'll actually get with your water. The chelate specification is basic technical data, not a minor detail.

What does it mean for a manufacturer to publish their bibliographic sources?

A fertilizer formulation involves concrete decisions: what N:P:K ratios to use at each stage, what Ca and Mg concentrations, which micronutrients to include and in what form. Those decisions can be grounded in controlled trials published in peer-reviewed journals, or they can be the formulator's intuition translated into label numbers.

The difference matters because optimal nutrient ranges for cannabis have been published in recent years with reproducible methodology. For example, the optimal phosphorus range in bloom is confirmed at 30–60 ppm (Bevan et al., 2021, DOI: 10.3389/fpls.2021.764103; Westmoreland & Bugbee, 2022, DOI: 10.3389/fpls.2022.1015652). A fertilizer formulated without consulting that data may deliver three or four times that value, triggering iron and zinc antagonisms that show up as visual deficiencies.

  • A manufacturer that cites sources lets you verify whether the ranges they used come from cannabis trials or were extrapolated from other crops.
  • A manufacturer that cites no sources may have an excellent formula, but gives you no way to verify it. You're trusting the marketing.
  • The citations don't have to be on the label itself — it's enough if they're accessible on the website or in a downloadable spec sheet. What matters is that they exist and are verifiable.

What else do you evaluate after those three things?

Once you confirm the nitrogen is predominantly nitrate, the iron is EDDHA-chelated, and the manufacturer declares verifiable sources, the rest of the evaluation follows standard parameters:

  • Declared calcium and magnesium concentrations: confirmed optimal ranges in cannabis are 100–160 ppm Ca during veg and early bloom, and 35–70 ppm Mg in solution (Llewellyn et al., 2023, DOI: 10.3390/plants12030422; Morad & Bernstein, 2023, DOI: 10.3390/plants12142676).
  • Micronutrients: they should be present, and the Fe:Mn ratio should sit around 3:1 to 5:1 to avoid competition for the IRT1 channel (Cockson et al., 2019, DOI: 10.3390/app9204432).
  • Recommended working pH and EC: the manufacturer should specify the pH range and EC curve by stage. If they don't, that's missing data.

How do you tell a technical data sheet from a marketing sheet?

  • Technical data sheet: declares the chemical form of each nutrient, specifies the iron chelate, cites sources, indicates working pH and EC, distinguishes nitrate-N from ammoniacal-N.
  • Marketing sheet: uses superlatives without supporting data, doesn't specify chemical forms, cites no sources, talks about results without protocols or trial conditions.
  • A tech sheet can be poorly written and still be useful; a marketing sheet can be beautifully designed and tell you nothing verifiable. Content is what counts, not format.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fertilizer without EDDHA still work if I dial in my pH?

It depends on the chelate it uses. If it uses DTPA and you keep pH below 7.0, it can work fine. If it uses EDTA, you need to stay below 6.0 — hard to maintain consistently. With EDDHA your margin of error is much larger: it holds stable up to pH 10, so small swings won't lock out your iron.

What happens if the fertilizer doesn't declare the nitrogen form?

You have no way of knowing what proportion of ammoniacal nitrogen it contains. In hydro and coco, a high NH₄⁺ ratio can acidify the root zone and, at elevated concentrations, cause toxicity. It matters more in inert substrates than in soil, where microorganisms convert some of the ammonium to nitrate.

How do I find a manufacturer's sources if they're not on the label?

Look on their website for a 'tech sheet,' 'scientific basis,' or 'white paper' section. A Google Scholar search using the manufacturer or product name may surface published trials. A total absence of references doesn't automatically mean the product doesn't work — but it does mean you can't verify it independently.

Is the N:P:K ratio the most important number on the label?

No. It's the most visible number, but without knowing the chemical forms of each element it doesn't say much. An N:P:K of 3-1-2 can be excellent or mediocre depending on whether the N is nitrate or ammoniacal, whether the P is in a range that doesn't lock out micronutrients, and whether the chelates hold at your water's pH. The ratio is a starting point, not a diagnosis.
