What do carbohydrates actually do in the substrate?
Simple carbohydrates — sugars, molasses, polysaccharides — are not a direct nutrient for the plant. What they do is feed the microorganisms living in the root zone: beneficial bacteria and fungi metabolize them, multiply, and as a byproduct release enzymes and organic acids that solubilize minerals and convert them into forms the roots can absorb. It's an indirect effect, but the mechanism is well documented — living soil works better when it has available energy.
Why use them during flowering and not veg?
During veg, microbial demand is lower and the plant has enough resources to exude sugars through its roots on its own. In flowering, the plant redirects energy toward bud production and those root exudates drop off. Adding carbs externally at that point sustains microbial activity exactly when the plant most needs the substrate working at full capacity. That's why CANDY's feeding schedule doesn't kick in until week 4, ramping up in frequency through peak flowering (weeks 6 to 12).
Do they work in any grow system?
No. The mechanism depends on having an active microbial community present. In soil and inoculated coco that community exists and carbohydrates make sense. In recirculating hydro there's no substrate microbiome — the sugars have nothing to feed, and in a DWC system they can actually encourage opportunistic pathogens. That's why CANDY has no hydro dosing: the product simply doesn't apply to those systems.
What sets CANDY apart from plain molasses?
The unsulphured cane molasses you find at a grocery or brewing store is a cheap option, but it comes with two problems: sugar concentration varies batch to batch (no way to dose it consistently) and it carries impurities that can clog drippers or shift pH in unpredictable ways. CANDY is a calibrated formulation with known concentration and stable pH, designed to be added on alternating feeds without throwing off your base nutrient solution.
What CANDY doesn't do — and why it matters to say so
CANDY does not increase yield, does not raise THC or CBD, and does not replace mineral nutrition. Cannabinoid profiles are driven primarily by genetics and by how you manage N, K, and light — carbohydrates don't move that needle. What it does contribute is keeping the living substrate active, which can improve overall nutrient availability when the medium is properly inoculated. It's a support tool, not a booster.
How does CANDY fit with Helix's three base nutrients?
The three bases — ALPHA, BETA, and GAMMA — run together throughout the entire cycle, shifting ratios by growth stage, and together cover complete mineral nutrition. CANDY is a complementary additive that goes into alternating feeds without replacing any of the bases. Think of CANDY as food for the soil and the bases as food for the plant — that's the clearest way to understand what each one does.
When does it make the most sense to add it to your feed schedule?
- In soil that's been pre-inoculated with Trichoderma or Bacillus: the microbiome is already active and carbohydrates keep it going.
- In reused coco or coco with a history of previous grows: the microbial community has already colonized the medium.
- During mid to late flowering (weeks 6–12): when natural root exudation drops and the plant most needs the microbial environment functioning.
- It doesn't make sense in freshly opened, uninoculated coco, or in any type of hydroponic system.
