Cannabis Calcium Deficiency: Symptoms, Causes, and How to Fix It

Calcium is immobile: when it runs short, symptoms appear first on NEW growth (tip burn, brown necrotic spots, deformation). The most common causes aren't a shortage of the mineral itself — they're pH outside the 5.5–6.5 range, excess ammonium as the nitrogen source, or low VPD slowing transpiration and cutting off calcium flow from the roots. Fixing pH and your N source usually clears the problem without bumping the dose.

Why does calcium hit new leaves first, not old ones?

Calcium is a phloem-immobile nutrient: once it's locked into a cell wall, the plant cannot redistribute it to new tissue when the supply from the roots drops off. That's why deficiency always shows up in the youngest tissue — it has the highest demand and gets the least when calcium flow falls.

This is what sets it apart from magnesium or nitrogen deficiency, which start on the oldest leaves (mobile nutrients the plant pulls back to redirect to new growth). Seeing an old leaf yellow and suspecting calcium is the most common misdiagnosis out there.

What do calcium deficiency symptoms actually look like?

  • New leaves with tip burn or marginal necrosis that's dark brown — not yellow.
  • Irregular necrotic spots on the blade of young leaves, with no clear interveinal pattern.
  • Downward curl or clawing on actively growing apical shoots.
  • In severe cases, stems lose rigidity and growing tips necrose directly.
  • The necrosis does NOT start interveinal (that's Mn or Fe); does NOT start on old leaves (that's Mg, N, or K).

When should you suspect it's pH, not the mineral itself?

Calcium availability in solution drops outside the root-zone pH range of 5.5–6.5 (Veazie et al. 2025, NC State). Above pH 6.5, calcium starts precipitating as carbonates; below 5.5, competing cations crowd out absorption sites. Tap water in many regions runs alkaline (pH 7.5–8), which means without active pH correction the reservoir drifts up and calcium becomes unavailable even when your recipe includes it.

The first diagnostic step is to measure pH at the irrigation point and in the runoff. If both are outside the target range — hydro 5.6–5.8, coco 5.8–6.2, soil 6.0–6.5 — correcting pH comes before any dose adjustment.

What does ammonium have to do with calcium deficiency?

Your nitrogen source matters as much as pH. Ammonium (NH4+) competes directly with calcium for the same root-uptake transporters: when ammonium makes up a high proportion of the solution, the plant absorbs less calcium even if there's plenty in the reservoir. On top of that, ammonium acidifies the rhizosphere through the proton exchange that happens during uptake, pushing local pH around the roots even lower.

Saloner & Bernstein (2022) tested different NH4/NO3 ratios in cannabis and found that the all-nitrate condition (0% ammonium) was optimal; as ammonium increased, cationic toxicity symptoms appeared alongside secondary calcium and magnesium deficits. The practical takeaway: in a precision fertilizer, nitrogen should come predominantly as nitrate.

Why can low VPD cause calcium deficiency even when pH is dialed in?

Calcium travels from roots to leaves mainly via mass flow: the water movement that carries nutrients through the xylem, driven by transpiration. When VPD is too low — humid air, stomata nearly shut — transpiration drops and mass flow slows down. The result is that calcium reaches new tissue more slowly, even with a well-formulated solution and correct pH.

The optimal VPD range is 0.7–1.2 kPa for veg and 1.0–1.5 kPa for flower (Corredor-Perilla et al. 2025). With sustained VPD below 0.7 kPa, expect to see calcium deficiency symptoms on actively growing sites — not because the recipe is wrong, but because the delivery mechanism is throttled.

How do you tell calcium deficiency apart from other lookalikes?

  • Ca vs Mg: Ca starts on new leaves with brown necrosis; Mg starts on old leaves with yellow interveinal chlorosis. Different tissue, different color.
  • Ca vs Fe: iron deficiency produces interveinal chlorosis on new leaves (yellow leaf, green veins), no direct necrotic spots. Ca produces brown necrosis without generalized yellowing first.
  • Ca vs Mn: manganese deficiency shows interveinal chlorosis on new leaves with a yellow netting pattern; Ca produces more irregular, brown necrotic spots.
  • Ca vs nutrient burn from high EC: salt burn shows up as tip necrosis on old leaves first, because old leaves accumulate more salts as transpiration concentrates them. Ca burns new leaves.
  • Ca vs Boron: B deficiency also hits growing points, but with more severe deformation and symptoms at the apical meristem before the leaf blade is affected.

How do you fix a calcium deficiency, step by step?

The right sequence doesn't start by bumping calcium dose — it starts by ruling out the systemic causes first:

  • 1. Measure pH at irrigation and in runoff. If it's outside the target range for your medium, correct it with ACID PRO (phosphoric acid for fast corrections) or ACID BIO (biodegradable organic acids for a gentler pH rebound) before anything else.
  • 2. Check your nitrogen source. If the fertilizer uses ammonium as the primary N source, switch to a nitrate-dominant source.
  • 3. Check the grow-room VPD. If it's below 0.7 kPa in veg or 1.0 kPa in flower, bring down relative humidity before adjusting the feeding schedule.
  • 4. Only if pH, N source, and VPD are all dialed in: gradually increase calcium with CALMAG until new tissue grows healthy. In coco, CALMAG starts at 1.5–2.0 mL/L from seedling; in hydro and soil, 0.5–1.0 mL/L depending on stage.
  • 5. Don't abruptly cut CALMAG in the second half of flower: calcium demand drops (Saloner & Bernstein 2023) but doesn't disappear — tapering it down is safer than cutting it cold.

How much calcium does the plant need at each stage?

Four separate cannabis research groups converge on an optimal Ca solution band of 100–160 ppm during veg and the first half of flower (Bevan et al. 2021; Powell & Bauerle 2026; Llewellyn et al. 2023; Saloner & Bernstein 2023). Calcium demand rises steadily through veg — Powell & Bauerle (2026) documented uptake climbing from 44 to 97 mg/L during that stage — and falls in the second half of flower as cell growth slows.

The 100 ppm floor matters: below that threshold, Llewellyn et al. (2023) observed the biomass and THC drops mentioned earlier. The range isn't decorative. Running near the bottom of the optimal band — the Helix approach — means you're not overfeeding, but you're also not falling below where the research shows real consequences.

Frequently asked questions

I have brown spots on new leaves but pH is fine — what do I check first?

Check the VPD in your grow room. If the air is too humid (VPD below 0.7 kPa in veg or 1.0 kPa in flower), transpiration drops and calcium flow from the roots slows down even when your recipe and pH are both correct. Dropping relative humidity or nudging temps up a few degrees usually clears it in 3–5 days.

Can calcium deficiency be confused with nutrient burn?

Yes, but look at where it starts: high-EC burn necroses the tips of old leaves first (the ones most exposed to salt accumulation). Calcium deficiency necroses new leaves first. If the damage is starting on young tissue, rule out calcium before you cut the EC.

Which substrates get calcium deficiency most often?

Coco is the most common in the first few weeks: unbuffered coir sequesters Ca2+ at its cation exchange sites before it ever reaches the roots. In hydro and rockwool, the issue is usually pH out of range or ammonium as the N source. In peat-based soil, the high CEC can cause something similar to coco, just slower.

Can I fix calcium deficiency with milk or eggshells?

Not in a precision fertigation setup. Milk delivers organic calcium with unpredictable availability and can clog drippers or ferment in solution. Eggshells release calcium very slowly and only at acidic pH. To correct a real deficiency, use a calcium source formulated for fertigation — like CALMAG — which delivers available calcium without throwing off the rest of your nutrient balance.

How long does it take for the plant to recover once you fix the cause?

New tissue that grows after the correction will come in healthy. Leaves that are already damaged don't recover — necrosis is irreversible. That's why the right indicator isn't whether the spots disappear, but whether new shoots grow in clean 5–7 days after the fix. If new growth is still showing symptoms, there's another cause you haven't addressed yet.
