Cannabis Nitrogen Deficiency: Signs and How to Fix It

N is mobile in the plant: when supply drops, it gets pulled from older (lower) leaves and redirected to new growth. The symptom is uniform yellowing that starts on the oldest leaves and works its way up. It's common in veg when watering plain water. In late flower it's normal senescence. Why does nitrogen deficiency always start on the bottom leaves?

Nitrogen is a mobile nutrient inside the plant. That means when external supply falls short, the plant doesn't just sit there — it actively pulls nitrogen out of older tissue and ships it to active growth sites (new shoots, apical meristems). The result: the oldest leaves, down in the lower canopy, are the first to lose color. This mobility is the key to telling nitrogen deficiency apart from iron or calcium deficiency, which hit new leaves first because those nutrients are immobile.

What does it actually look like? Visual symptoms step by step

Nitrogen deficiency follows a fairly predictable progression:

  • Early stage: the oldest leaves in the lower third lose their deep green and shift to a pale green or yellow-green — uniform color change with no spots or interveinal patterns.
  • Mid stage: yellowing moves into the middle canopy. Affected leaves go fully yellow and may drop. New growth at the top stays green because the plant is prioritizing it.
  • Advanced stage: yellowing reaches the upper canopy, growth stalls, and stems may turn reddish or purple from anthocyanin buildup.
  • Key differential: the color change is UNIFORM across the whole leaf — blade and veins shift together. If the veins stay green while the tissue between them yellows, think iron or magnesium instead.

Is it a deficiency or normal flowering senescence?

During late flower (last 2–3 weeks), lower-leaf yellowing is completely normal and expected. The plant enters senescence: it redirects all resources to the buds and abandons old foliage. Forcing high nitrogen at this stage is counterproductive — it can delay ripening, leave a harsh taste in the harvest from residual N, and doesn't offer any real benefit.

The key question is: what stage are you in? If you're in veg or early flower and the bottom leaves are yellowing uniformly and progressively, that's a deficiency. If you're 10–14 days from harvest, it's probably senescence. Timing context matters as much as the visual symptom.

How much nitrogen does cannabis need, and at which stages?

Nitrogen requirements shift significantly across the grow cycle. Saloner & Bernstein (2020) found that cannabis in the vegetative stage has the highest N demand, and that reducing nitrogen during flowering improved nutrient-use efficiency without affecting floral biomass. Cockson et al. (2019) documented operational ranges by stage:

  • Seedling / clone: low N, dilute solution (EC 0.6–1.0 mS/cm).
  • Active veg: high N, approximately 150–250 ppm total nitrogen in solution.
  • Early flower (weeks 1–4): moderate N, tapering down gradually.
  • Late flower (week 5 onward): low or near-zero N; the plant draws from foliar reserves.
  • Pre-harvest (last 1–2 weeks): many growers cut nitrogen feeding entirely (flush).

What are the most common causes of nitrogen deficiency?

Before bumping your nutrient dose, check these causes first:

  • pH out of range: this is the number-one cause of apparent deficiencies. At pH above 7 or below 5.5, nitrogen becomes less available even when it's present in solution. In hydro keep pH 5.8–6.2; in soil/coco, 6.0–6.5.
  • Watering with plain water: running several plain-water feedings in a row depletes substrate reserves.
  • Overwatering: waterlogged media restricts root uptake of all nutrients, N included.
  • Low solution temperature (below 18°C / 64°F): slows root activity and nitrogen uptake.
  • Depleted substrate: in containers without replenishment, the medium loses its nutrient-holding capacity.

How do you fix nitrogen deficiency, step by step?

The correction needs to be gradual. Spiking nitrogen all at once can push you from deficiency straight into toxicity — dark, clawing leaves, excessive vegetative growth during flower.

  • Step 1 — Check pH: before adding anything, measure the pH of your solution or runoff. If it's out of range, dial that in first. It's the most important diagnostic step.
  • Step 2 — Check EC: measure the EC of your runoff or solution. Low EC means the plant simply isn't receiving enough nutrients overall.
  • Step 3 — Bump dose gradually: if pH is dialed and EC is low, increase your N concentration by 20–30% from your current dose. Don't double it in one shot.
  • Step 4 — Observe over 48–72 hours: leaves that already yellowed won't green back up (the damage is irreversible), but new growth should come in deep green. If the yellowing stops spreading, the fix worked.
  • Step 5 — Don't chase the damaged leaves: once a leaf has yellowed from N deficiency, you can pull it. What matters is that new growth is healthy.
